Application Procedures

Below are the steps required for completing the application for graduate study to the Electrical Engineering department.
1) Carefully follow the instructions on the University's central Office of Graduate Admissions application home page:  http://gradadmissions.stanford.edu

2)  All recommendation letters (maximum and minimum of three) MUST BE SUBMITTED USING THE ONLINE APPLICATION SYSTEM. Paper copies sent via post will not be accepted.  The online recommendation submission system is easy to use and has been thoroughly tested for ease and effectiveness.

3)  Complete the Supplementary Information form on the online application.  Calculate your overall and technical GPA.  Technical GPA is defined as all engineering courses (except writing), mathematics, computer science and hard sciences (chemistry, physics).  DO NOT NORMALIZE OR CONVERT GRADE POINT AVERAGE TO A 4.00 SCALE.

4)  Mail two (2) official copies of academic record (i.e., transcript) to the Electrical Engineering Department.  Send one from each postsecondary institution attended for at least one year as a full time student.  This includes non-degree option courses at Stanford, if applicable.  Transcripts (original or official translation) must be in English.

Concerning course work completed in a study abroad program: If the course work and grades are reflected on the transcript of your home institution, you do not need to submit original transcripts from the study abroad institution.

Concerning foreign institutions: If your institution provides a transcript in a language other than English, we require that you submit a translation of the transcript that is either provided by the institution or a certified translator.

The department only requires that you send hard copies of your academic records (i.e., official transcripts).  Please DO NOT send any other paper documents to EE's Admissions Office such as a resume/CV, publications or financial documents.  Please mail your official transcripts to the following address:

Stanford University
Department of Electrical Engineering
Graduate Admissions Office
350 Serra Mall
Stanford, CA 94305-9505

5)  Submit the online Graduate Admissions application.

The EE department uploads your submitted application to its own database.  We use this database to review your application.  To complete the next two steps, please visit the following website 48 hours after submitting the online application.

http://ee-admissions.stanford.edu/forms/apply-status.php

Enter your email address as submitted on the application.  You will receive an email explaining how to proceed.  Follow the directions in this email carefully.

If you submit the online application during the weeks of December 3 and 10, 2007, your application may not arrive in the Electrical Engineering's database by the published deadline.  Please do not be alarmed, you will not be penalized.  Please submit the unofficial transcript PDF and text copy of your statement of purpose as soon as you are able to successfully enter the EE status website.

6)  Upload one (1) unofficial/current copy of each academic record (i.e., transcripts) onto the Electrical Engineering status website.  The document MUST BE IN PDF FORMAT and NOT EXCEED 5 megabytes in size.  The transcript must be in English.  If you do not have access to unofficial transcripts, provide a PDF of the official transcript.  We recommend keeping the resolution low and using gray scale/black and white to minimize PDF size.

7)  Submit a copy of your statement of purpose onto the Electrical Engineering status website.  NOTE:  This must be done IN ADDITION TO the statement submitted with the online application.  Both statements should be the same. The document must be in text format and not exceed one full page (4000 letters - including spaces and punctuation).  DO NOT SEND HTML OR SIMILAR FORMATTING.  If the original statement is longer than 4000 letters, please cut down the length for this submission.  THIS COPY WILL BE READ DURING THE EVALUATION OF YOUR APPLICATION.

If are unable to perform any of the above steps, please contact the EE Admissions Office immediately.
