Honors Cooperative Program

The Honors Cooperative Program (HCP) enables qualified engineers and scientists from nearby companies to pursue a graduate degree at Stanford on a part-time basis while maintaining full-time professional employment.

Eligibility and Degrees

In order to participate in the Honors Cooperative Program, your employer must be a member of the Stanford Center for Professional Development.   Please see the SCPD website for detailed information and membership opportunities.

The EE Department accepts part-time applications for the Master of Science and Engineer degrees only.  The Ph.D. is not available through HCP.

General Standards and Arrangements

HCP students enjoy the same privileges and responsibilities as full time Stanford students.  Academic advisors from the EE department are assigned to HCP students. Degree program proposals must be submitted and satisfactory degree progress is required.

HCP students are encouraged to maintain a minimum course load of three units (one class) per quarter (including summer).  Degrees must be completed in five years.

Admission Procedures

HCP applicants must follow the same procedure as applicants to full time study and are assessed using the same criteria.  Admission standards are not different for HCP applicants.  The online application may be found here.

Applicants who have been out of academia for at least five years may have difficulty finding three letters of reference from University faculty members.  If this is the case, you may substitute one professional reference.  Should more professional references be required, please contact the EE Admissions Office

If you have completed Non-Degree Option courses, please include this information in the application and submit an official transcript to the EE Admissions office.

Deadlines

HCP offers admission on a quarterly basis.  The deadlines are below:

If you are applying to the Winter or Autumn quarter, please allow three (3) weeks for a decision.  If you are applying to the Spring or Summer quarter, decisions may take longer.  We may require as much as six (6) weeks to notify you of a decision. You will be notified via email.

***If Applying for Summer Quarter***

In May, the online application link becomes inactive due to preparation for the coming application season.  If you have begun an online application, the computer system will send you an email informing you of the impending shut down; please finish the application as quickly as possible.  Should the online system shut down prior to submission, you will be required to submit a paper application.  The status update function, found on the EE website, will no longer be available. Please contact the EE Admissions Office to verify the status of your application and to find out if your letters of recommendation were submitted electronically.

If you have not begun an online application, apply using a paper application.  Instructions on how to obtain the paper application may be found on the Application and Admission Information section of our website.
